Considered as Patek Philippe's most important watch of the 1990s, the reference 3970 is the heir to the 2499 and even before that to the famous and rare 1518. Watch produced in four precious metals: yellow gold, white gold, rose gold and platinum .

The official name is 3970E. “E” stands for “etanche” (waterproof in French) and refers to the screw-down case back introduced with the second series of the 3970.

The silver dial is very balanced, although it displays a lot of information. The counter at 3 o'clock combines the leap year indicator and the 30-minute chronograph counter. At 9 o'clock is the subseconds and 24-hour (or day-night) display. The moon phases and date are visible in the counter at 6 o'clock. Finally, the day of the week and the month are displayed in two windows at 12 o'clock.
